I am obsessed with volunteering, inspirational experiences and supporting others. I was looking for a charitable race when one of my friends suggested Girls on the Run. I had been seeing signs and notices everywhere about it, but wasn’t quite sure what they were all about.
Once I looked into Girls on the Run, I was so inspired and totally felt like a kid again.
The majority of the girls who participate are in that super fun time in life (commence sarcastic eye roll) between the ages of 9 – 15. I remember those times. It was the time when life was transitioning very fast for me from playful water fights outside with my neighborhood friends to boys and partying. And, the transition would go back and forth emotionally throughout the entire time period. It wasn’t the easiest.
Girls on the Run is not just a 5K for tweens and teens. It is a 24 lesson curriculum taught by certified GOTR coaches. They focus on teaching and encouraging health and fitness, confidence building, valuing teamwork and accomplishment, and understanding how it all affects the world we live in.
The girls also train all course long, getting ready for the finale….the Girls on the Run 5K!
A 5K is not easy to complete. For some, maybe, but not for all! We all showed up that day, rain or shine. That day happened to be rain. And cold. And did I mention muddy?
Yup.
Side note….outfit choices were quite hilarious since Denver had been sunny and warm leading up to that day. It looked like several parents were a bit confused on how to dress themselves and their children, but that’s another blog post.
Well….fast forward 39 minutes and 4 seconds and I crossed the finish line! Woo hoo!
Even though I was volunteering as a Running Buddy to support and cheer on the girls…I lost every dang one of them, they were so fast! But, we got it together at the end. Here’s a pic of us riding high on endorphins, teamwork, success, and perseverance!
Learn more and considering volunteering! It was an amazing experience. And, after all of it, I got very special thank you from Girls on the Run. Thank you!
Hello Running Buddy!
Many thanks for your contributions to the Girls on the Run 5k! It was an amazing day despite the rain, and we could not have made it happen without your support. We thank you for your flexibility with being assigned to a school and generously giving your time. We sincerely appreciate the important role you played in this special day for girls in the program.
Again, thank you!
Sincerely,
Girls on the Run Rockies Team
