How to Get Published and Featured So You Earn Quality Backlinks
There’s a moment every business owner remembers: the first time you see your name in an article, or hear yourself introduced on a podcast, and think, “Wait, they want to hear from me?” It’s a lovely feeling. And it turns out it’s also one of the best things you can do for your SEO.
When a reputable website mentions you and links back to your site, that link is called a backlink. Google treats quality backlinks a bit like recommendations. A link from a respected local news site, an industry publication or a well run blog tells Google that other people trust you, which helps your website earn its place higher in the results.
The good news is that you don’t need a publicist or a fancy title to get published. You need a little strategy, a little persistence and a willingness to share what you know. Here’s how I approach it.

Why quality backlinks matter more than lots of backlinks
Not all links are created equal. A single link from a trusted, relevant source can do more for you than dozens of links from random directories or spammy sites. In fact, low quality links can sometimes do more harm than good.
When you’re thinking about where to get published, look for sites that are:
- Relevant to your industry, your clients or your local area.
- Real, with actual readers, current articles and a clear editorial voice.
- Respected, the kind of place your ideal client would recognize or trust.
Getting featured also does something links alone can’t. It builds the kind of reputation that AI search tools like Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT pick up on when they decide which businesses to mention. Being talked about in credible places helps you get talked about everywhere.
How to write guest articles that get accepted
Guest articles are one of the most reliable ways to get published, because many blogs and publications genuinely need good content from people who know their stuff.
- Make a short list of sites your clients read. Think local magazines, professional association blogs, community organizations and complementary businesses. A family therapist might write for a parenting blog; a wellness practice might write for a local fitness studio.
- Read their guidelines. Many sites have a “write for us” or contributor page. Follow it to the letter. Editors notice.
- Pitch an idea, not yourself. Send a short email with one or two specific article ideas that fit their audience, plus a sentence on why you’re the right person to write them.
- Write something genuinely useful. Not a sales page in disguise. Teach something real.
- Include a natural author bio. Most sites let you add a short bio with a link to your website. That’s your backlink.

How to get quoted as an expert in articles
Journalists and writers are always looking for expert sources, often on tight deadlines. Being the person who responds quickly with a clear, quotable answer is a wonderful way to get featured.
- Sign up for source request services that send writers’ requests for experts to your inbox. Several free and paid options exist, and they change over time, so search for current ones in your field.
- Answer fast and stay on topic. Give a short, direct answer to the exact question asked, then a little supporting detail.
- Include your credentials and a link. Make it easy for the writer to introduce you correctly.
- Don’t take silence personally. Many responses won’t get used. That’s normal. Keep going.
I’ve been quoted as a web hosting expert in Forbes Advisor, and you can read a little more about that in my post on being featured in Forbes. The lesson I took from it is a simple one: speak to the topic you know best, and say it clearly.
How to get featured in local press
Local news outlets, neighborhood publications and city magazines love stories about the people in their community. You don’t have to be launching a rocket. You just need a genuine local angle.
A few story ideas that tend to work:
- A milestone, like an anniversary, a new location or a meaningful expansion.
- A free community event, workshop or fundraiser you’re hosting.
- Your expert take on a local trend or seasonal concern.
- A personal story about why you started your business.
Find the right editor or writer for that section, send a short and friendly email, and include everything they need: who, what, when, where, why, plus a good photo. Local press links are especially helpful for local SEO, which I cover more in my post about working with a local Denver SEO expert.
How to get booked on podcasts and interviews
Podcasts and online interview series are a great fit for owners who’d rather talk than write. Most shows publish episode pages with notes and links to their guests’ websites, which means a backlink along with a new audience.
- Find shows your ideal clients listen to. Smaller, niche shows are often easier to get on and more relevant than giant ones.
- Listen to a couple of episodes first. Know the format and the host’s style.
- Send a short email pitch with two or three topics you could speak on and why their listeners would care.
- Make it easy to say yes. Have a short bio, a headshot and your website link ready to send.
- Share the episode once it’s live. Hosts love guests who help promote the show.
Written interview features work the same way. Many local and industry publications run Q&A style spotlights on business owners, and they’re often happy to hear from you.
Don’t forget to self-publish, too
Getting published by others is wonderful, but your own website is the home base everything links back to. Keep publishing helpful articles on your own blog, because that’s what gives writers, editors and podcast hosts something worth linking to. When they look you up, you want them to find a site that confirms you’re the expert.
